What do you mean by "AI doing AI research"?

AI systems doing the research that builds more capable general AI: designing, training and improving the next generation of models. Each round speeds up the next. Using AI to write code, study for an exam or run a shop is not what this is about.

Isn't a global ban impossible to enforce?

It's hard, and critics make fair points about offshore labs and grey areas. Global agreements on nuclear tests and ozone-depleting chemicals were also called impossible. They started when enough people made it clear they wanted them. This site is that step.

What if AI isn't good enough for my work yet?

Then this statement may not be yours, and that's fine. Better tools for specific jobs can keep improving. The line is drawn at the loop that makes general AI accelerate beyond our ability to understand it.

Why does my signature matter if experts already signed letters?

Experts have said the race is risky. What's missing is the people the race is supposedly for saying they don't need it. When everyone can see that users, developers, researchers and business owners agree, acting together becomes easier.
